The Boys

two portraits of boys in black and white

It was a sunday morning. The smell of toast in the air and a cup of coffee still in my hand. The sun comes into this room early morning and hits the wall behind, but it had already passed.

They were dressed, for once not both in football shirts, and sitting side by side. They were talking football, stats, goals, results... I forget what exactly.

They are 16 and 12. They are two of four. I have two girls and the boys.

I have photographed them many many times in this spot. Separately and together.

The light comes from the window on the left that looks out over a small terrace and the corner of the garden that I haven’t the energy to tame. They play football there and, in the corner, surrounded by weeds under the elderflower tree, lies the old goal that no longer stands.

They are 16 and 12.

It will probably be our last year all living together.
